Transient ischemic attacks (or TIAs) occur when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery, and part of the brain doesn’t get the blood it needs. The symptoms last less than 24 hours and most TIAs last less than five minutes.
TIA symptoms and stroke symptoms are identical and should be treated with the same urgency. TIAs are more useful for predicting if a stroke will occur rather than when a stroke will happen. They can occur days, weeks or even months before a stroke.
